Skillset Screen Academy at LCC & EIM

In July 2005, London College of Communication (LCC) and Ealing Institute of Media (EIM) achieved the coveted status of Skillset Screen Academy. One of only seven such industry-recognised centres of excellence throughout the UK, SSA at LCC & EIM combines Higher Education at LCC (one of six colleges in the University of the Arts) with Further Education at EIM (one of four colleges in the West London group).

Together, the Skillset Screen Academies themselves form a collaborative network, aimed at driving up the standards of the UK skills base and promoting them internationally.

Uniquely, SSA at LCC & EIM is tasked with training not only the familiar roles of writer/producer/director/editor etc. but also the craft skills that go to make up such a vital part of the workforce: carpenters, plasterers, electricians etc.

Summer 2007 brought all these skills together in one enterprise with the launch of an ambitious 35mm project. This involved the construction of major sets on the stages at Elstree Film Studios in order to shoot a commercial, a short drama and a music promo. With students fulfilling all the major roles, each department was mentored by a film industry professional in order to maximise the potential of ‘learning on the job’.

Throughout the year, both at LCC and EIM, industry professionals are also involved in conducting masterclasses and running workshops. These are designed to enhance existing courses and to bring the film industry and ‘academia’ closer together.

Students applying to LCC or to EIM/Acton may be eligible for Skillset Screen Academy bursaries to assist with fees and materials.
