Rob Buckler, Producer

Robert began his career as a Script Editor on 'Play for Today' and 'Thirty Minute Theatre' for BBC Television. He went on to produce 'Pressure' (Britain’s first black feature film) before becoming Head of Plays at Thames Television and then forming independent production company, Renegade Films. His credits as producer or executive producer include the tv miniseries, 'The Last Place on Earth', and the feature films, 'Brothers in Trouble', 'Hotel Splendide', 'Room to Rent' and 'Fateless'.

JOB PROFILE

In theory, the producer could be the first person in and the last out, from conceiving the original idea through to signing the final audited accounts. In practice, this is often too much for any one person and so the producing role is sometimes divided up between producers, executive producers, line producers and the post production supervisor. Because of their interest and engagement in all phases of the process, producers tend to be generalists, not specialists like everyone else. The best of them love making films and are not just in it for the deal.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

A nose for a good story. A head for figures. A skin thick enough to take rejection but thin enough to receive advice. A problem-solving attitude to life.

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Do the thing that frightens you. Hit them with your best shot. Align your project with the likely market. Be brave enough to let go of something that is not going to work out.
