Mapping the Industry

‘Mapping the Industry’ is an ad hoc series in which distinguished industry professionals describe what their roles entail, illustrated by case studies from their own experiences. The series tries to open up the full range of job opportunities in the industry in addition to those already known to the students.

Some of the people who have spoken in this series are Iain Smith (producer), Anthony Dod Mantle (DOP), Neil Corbould (SFX), Andrew Eaton (Producer), Michael Carlin (Production Designer), Stephen Warbeck (composer), Patrick Crowe (multi-platform storyteller) and Guy Tannahill (line producer).

Neil Corbould

NEIL CORBOULD
SPECIAL EFFECTS & STUNTS

In 1978, Neil Corbould began his career as a special effects runner on ‘Superman’. He went on to work on films such as The Elephant man, An American Werewolf in London, Amadeus, Cliffhanger, Leon and several Bond films. His record of achievement in special effects speaks for itself.

Neil recently worked on ‘Blood Diamond’ and ‘Defiance’. He is currently working on the re-make of ‘Clash of the Titans’.

Michael Carlin

MICHAEL CARLIN
PRODUCTION DESIGNER

University of the Arts alumnus and award-winning production designer, Michael Carlin, studied sculpture and visual art in Australia before coming to London in 1988 to study Design for Film and TV at Chelsea College of Art & Design.

Early in his career, Michael worked on films such as Fever Pitch and The War Zone. More recently, Michael has worked on The Last King of Scotland, Mr Bean’s Holiday, In Bruges and The Duchess.

His most recent credits include The Last King of Scotland, In Bruges, The Duchess, and currently The Eagle of the Ninth.

Anthony Dod Mantle

ANTHONY DOD MANTLE
DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY

A graduate of the BA Film & Video course at London College of Communication, Anthony Dod Mantle worked since the early 1990’s as a cinematographer in Denmark and rose to prominence working with the Dogme movement.

He has won awards and international acclaim for his work on films such as Festen, Dogville, 28 Days Later, Julien Donkey-Boy and The Last King of Scotland.

He won a BAFTA and an Oscar for his work on Slumdog Millionaire – his fifth film with Danny Boyle.

Stephen Wooley

STEPHEN WOOLEY
PRODUCER

Stephen Woolley was born in London, England. He has been a film producer for twenty-five years, often working closely with the accomplished director Neil Jordan.

His credits as producer include The Company of Wolves (84), Mona Lisa (86), Scandal (89) the Academy Award®-winning The Crying Game (92), Interview with the Vampire (94), Michael Collins (96) and The End of the Affair (99).

His work has earned him numerous awards and nominations, including winning the Motion Picture Producer of the Year Award from the Producer’s Guild of America for The Crying Game.

Woolley is also a former Chairman of the Film Committee of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.

Woolley’s recent productions include his directorial debut Stoned (05), and as producer When Did You Last See Your Father? (07), How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (08), the upcoming Sounds Like Teen Spirit (09) and Perrier's Bounty (09).

Sacha Bennett

SACHA BENNETT
DIRECTOR

Originally an actor, writer/director/producer Sacha Bennett’s feature film debut, ‘TUESDAY’, opened in cinemas on 10 October 2008. Starring Philip Glenister and John Simm, it tells the story of three gangs who rob the same bank of the same day.
